Introduction: NEW RELEASE 03/19//2008 !!! Linguas OS 1.3 !!!
Linguas OS is a FREE (both as in without charge, and
as in with
Liberty) GNU/Linux
operating system adapted for translators.
Linguas OS is a remaster of PCFluxboxOS
built for translators.
Save thousands of dollars a year by not having to
purchase proprietary software licenses, and yet, have all of
the
software you need to perform your work, including a CAT program, full
office
suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, html editing
and
databases, tools for manipulating .pdf files, and dtp, internet tools,
dictionaries and thesaurus, tools for managing the financial end of the
business, communications
tools, image manipulation tools. Linguas OS has tools to handle and
manipulate all of the industry
standard file formats, including all MSOffice® files, image files,
Adobe® .pdf files, etc.
This
software is FREE, legal, not pirated, configurable, stable, secure,
and, best of all, did I mention, it's FREE! Additionally,
Linux
is not as vulnerable, or as often prey to,
viruses, malware, spyware, and crashes, so, you spend more time
working,
and less time messing with your computer dealing with said
issues.

Linguas OS with OpenOffice and OmegaT
Thus, Linguas OS was created for two purposes:
1)
to demonstrate to professionals in the translation industry that they
need not be enslaved to propietary software vendors, rather, that
they can use FOSS
(Free
Open Source Software) alternatives, and;
2) For translators already using Linux and FOSS tools, Linguas OS is an
option that already includes the tools you are already using.
Linguas OS LiveCD is a complete GNU/Linux operating system
that fits
on a CDRom (only 452.2mb),
including Openoffice.org,
a
full-featured office suite, handling all major file formats (.doc,
.ppt, .xls, .pdf), Omega
T,
a CAT software / translation memory program (using standard .tmx
files), Evince (pdf reader), Seamonkey
browser, e-mail, html
editor and irc client software from Mozilla, Xfmedia-lightweight media
player, TransProCalc,
TickleDict,
TickleText,
Bitext2TMX,
and other
programs and tools I use on a daily basis. If you choose to install
it to your hardrive, additional software, literally thousands of other
programs,
including more games, media programs, scientific applications,
development
tools, etc., etc., are easily added with a few mouse-clicks.
Try Linguas OS without affecting your current system!
The LiveCD can run from your cd drive, without affecting your current system. You can boot it from the cd drive, experiment with the tools Linguas OS offers, then, remove the cd and boot back to your current system without any affect to the data on your hard drive. Of course, if you really dig it, you have the option of installing it it to your hardrive, too. It will allow you to partition your hard drive so that you can install it without removing your current OS, after which, when booting your machine, you will have the option of booting to either system.
* If you have the bandwidth for a larger download (1.1gb), and a DVD burner/drive, you may be interested in PCLOS-Trans, another Linux system for translators, remastered by Peter Sandrini, who was instrumental in the creation of Linguas OS. PCLOS-Trans is, essentially, a full PCLinuxOS system, with KDE desktop, and additional software. If you don't have a DVD burner, however, have no fear. Linguas OS can easily be "upgraded" to a fuller system using the Synaptic package manager.
